Saying that the Nepal Government should not be with the only Indian side of Koshi waste
The country has expressed concern that two small hydropower projects that are being developed in the region will reduce the capacity of the Tamor Hydropower Project generation.
Tamar Concerned Committee member, Prakash Dulal, said that the generation capacity of the 762-megawatatt Tamor project will be completed only 200 MW after 37.6-MW Kabeli 'A' Hydropower Project and 21.6-MW Lower Hewa Khola Hydropower Project. (TCC), a program organized here today.
While Tamor will spread over Taplejung, Panchthar and Tehrathum districts, the two projects are located at Panchthar. According to Dulal, Tamor - which is a reservoir project - would significantly reduce its dam dam if it has Lower Hewa Khola and Kabeli 'A' projects. This is because development of Tamor in its current form will be two small run-of-the-river projects submerge.
Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that the project has been given multiple benefits, the Tamor should be prioritized over Lower Hewa Khola and Kabeli 'A'. "From what I have heard, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has applied for the generation licensing project, and the government should provide it to the authority."
Oli also said that if developers of Kabeli 'A' and Lower Hewa Khola projects are at risk of incurring losses due to government's decision, they should be compensated. "We should promote independent power producers, but it is crucial to the projects like Tamor, which is more and more benefits."
The program, which was organized by TCC, also saw participants from lawmakers Bhim Acharya (CPN-UML) and Minendra Rijal (Nepali Congress). Echoing Oli, they said that the power generation capacity of Tamor should not be compromised by giving preference to other small projects.
